We're BAAAACCCKKK

After a brief hiatus induced by freezing temperatures and the sun setting at what seemed like noon, the New Orleans Chuggers finally returned to action last Wednesday night. The place was Lafreniere Park, and a couple dozen of us met in the parking lot of the park office for some mileage and socializing. After some time catching up with everyone we moved on to Tarpon Joe's to get out of the chilly night. Felt great to get back in the saddle.

The Return of Chubby the Chugger

We're happy to announce the 2nd Annual Chugger Cochon de Lait following this weekend's NOTC Anniversary Race. And this year it doesn't look like we'll have to compete with a tropical storm. The crowd should be large, so be sure to get your wrist band early. We'll have roasted pig, roasted turkey, some sides and several kegs of liquid refreshments. $5 for members, $10 for non-members buys you all you can eat and drink. And if you join on Saturday your $30 lifetime membership includes your pig & beer. Can't beat that with a stick. If you were one of the folks who braved the wind and rain last year then come on out and bring a friend or two.

Neither wind, nor rain, nor a Cajun Microwave that burst into flames could keep us down.

This year's a little bit different. We'll be starting the Cajun Microwave a little earlier so that we're sure to have the guest of honor ready on time. That means we'll be out at Roosevelt Mall on Friday night sort of camping/cooking/cocktailing. If you're not doing anything come out and join us. I promise there will be ample opportunity for jocularity and frolicsomeness. We got permission from the park, and how often are you going to get a chance to camp out in City Park?

New Orleans Chuggers Go East

A whole caravan of Chuggers headed East to Pensacola for the 2009 Capt Fun Runners Bushwacker 5k. The combination of a fast, flat course, with a single bridge at the end, and a cool party to finish everything off, make this a great out of town race to attend.

We hauled out the new Chugger flag and gathered as many members, still standing after the post race party. as we could find.

The whole weekend started with an impromptu crab boil at Da Fat Crab in Gulf Breeze. Despite the thunderstorm that threatened to cancel the party, at least 40 folks showed up for some seafood and socializing. Several stuck around to take in some of the night life in Gulf Breeze.

Not all of us made it to the race in time for the start. That explains the pictures from the finish line. Got several Chuggers (even some from the Panhandle chapter) coming down from the bridge onto Pensacola Beach.

The after party was a hit, including the 'forbidden fruit', some special cherries and watermelon. Once the post race party was over people scattered across the pier. Some of us moved into the water for a quick game of water football. All in all, a great day.

The Results Are In

and the winner of the New Orleans Chuggers Pulled Pork Cookoff is. Drum roll please.......Team Lotz of Butts.

The judges had their hands full making a tough decision.

That's right, Liz Lotz took home the first place honors followed closely by Daquiris for Ding Dongs, led by Anastasia Hayes and Lori's Butt captained by, who else, Lori Gerarve. Based on the time it took the judges to make their decision I would say that all the teams were well represented. And the aroma caused us to have to rope off the judging area while they did their thing, as we had several spectator wander into the judging area and offering to help with the task at hand.

Once the winners were announced we served up all that Boston Butt to several hundred hungry runners and wrapped the night up in true Chugger fashion. It was a true team effort with some members setting up the tables, some decorating the area, some serving the food, some organizing the lines and handing out the ditty bags and others organizing the clean up effort once all of the food was served.

Next year might not be pulled pork, but I think it's safe to say that we'll be doing something special the next time we sponsor one of these NOTC events.

Are You Ready for Some PORK????

The teams are set for the first (possibly annual) Chugger Pulled Pork Cookoff at the July 23rd NOTC Free For All. Come on out and cheer on your favorite team, or pitch in and lend us a hand as we try to feed about 400 hungry runners. Our final field includes:

Chugger Colors Displayed at the 2009 Spillway Classic

The new Chuggers flag was hauled out at the 2009 Great Spillway Classic. There was a great turn out of runners who made the best of a course that rated a 1.2 (seriously DRY).

After several retakes I think we finally got everyone in the picture

We had several first-timers and the dry course made for good times. After the watermelon sacrifice the party moved over to the flag. When Karah and Charlie broke out the 'watermelon' the party got started. The socializing went on for quite awhile, then moved across the street to the Spillway Bar.

Another Fish Fry for Chugger Run #43

David and Leslie Duhon slaugtered the Snapper and Grouper on a recent trip to Venice. They were nice enough to share with all of the Chuggers who showed up to run #43. The folks at Tarpon Joe's were nice enough to let us destroy their kitchen as Swami and I fried up several batches of tasty fish.

Everyone was all smiles after getting in some mileage and snacking on some tasty fish

One Hot Mama.....Er, I Mean Daddy

The 2009 NOTC Father's Day Race was....an exact opposite of last year's event. Last year there was about 5 inches of rain and gusting winds. This year there wasn't a cloud in the sky and the heat index was around 90F at the start. That didn't stop a whole bunch of dads from coming out and enjoying their day at Lasalle park.

Think you were HOT at the Father's Day Race?
What could it POSSIBLY be like inside a big, furry Boudreaux costume?

After the race several Chuggers made their way over to the shade of the park for Stephen Erwin's annual Father's Day Brunch. What a great way to cool off and enjoy some family fun.

Back to the Beach and Then Some

The weather for the 2009 Back to the Beach at the Treasure Chest in Kenner was balmy with a great breeze off the lake. Maybe that's why everyone had good times. And maybe that's why the party went LONG into the night. In fact, there was a large passel of Chuggers setup under one of the shelters next to the beer booth that danced and partied until the band packed up and they kicked us out.

What an awesome group of folks

Since nobody seemed to want the fun to end a judgement call was made to continue the festivities over at Stepbrothers. Take a look at the pics and judge for yourself if we were successful in passing a good time.

Chuggers love to dance almost as much as they love to run

Chuggers Go Greek....Again. OPA

Last year the Greek Fest was a hoot so it's no wonder that the event would be a must do on the Chugger calendar. There were lots of good times posted by a bunch of runners, then the Chuggers swarmed the festival grounds like army ants.

How do you say 'I Love Ouzo' in Greek?
Check out the pics here

There were pockets of Chuggers all over the festival and we even had a new member join. Welcome aboard Paul.

Chugger Fish Fry Part Deux

Our first fish fry was so popular that we decided to do it all again. This time we went mobile with the portable fryer. The fish seemed to make everyone happy as you can see from the pictures.

If you want to make the home page you have to take a picture with Fred

Nothing like running a few miles then rewarding yourself with a cool refreshment and some fried foods.

Chuggers Take Home Some Honors at the 2009 Barathon

The 2009 Barathon saw an awesome turn out of Chuggers, and some of them even brought home the hardware. It was a night for the Kellys as Kelly Nicholas took over first overall female and Kelly Ridle won her age division. Way to make your fellow Chuggers proud girls.

What an awesome looking group of Chuggers at the Barathon

Chugger Run #35 and Fish Fry

We awarded our faithful Chuggers with a fish fry at Tarpon Joe's. The awesome weather and sweet catfish brought out a ton of folks and the party went well into the night.

Muggin' for the camera. Fish will do that to ya.
Check out the pics here

We went through a bunch of piping hot fried fish and a bunch of icy cold refreshments. Perfect way to treat yourself after some mileage.

Chugger Bugs

About 100 Chuggers (including 20 new members) descended on Tarpon Joe's for the 1st Annual Chugger Crawfish Boil and Membership Drive. There were plenty of miles run followed by plenty of bugs and endless beer. Once Mason showed up with the music there was an impromptu Hoola Hoop contest followed by a Beer Pong tournament, emceed by our own Brad (who is starting to develop a reputation for working the microphone).

We went through over 300 pounds of crawfish at the 1st Annual Crawfish Boil

Thanks to all the members who made the day great including all our new members.

Iron Chuggers

The New Orleans Chuggers manned the water station at the 6 mile mark of the recent Half Ironman in New Orleans. We got plenty of words of appreciation from the athletes, so I'm' guessing from the their perspective we did OK. There were also several comments from our volunteers who were stoked to be helping these folks with this incredible event. As usual, there was music (thanks to DJ Markie Mark for supplying the iPod), food courtesy of BlueRunner and the obligitory adult beverages thanks to Tommy Grote (who's got the awesome hookup).

Karah made her appearance at the stop and looked like she was having the time of her life.

Here's to a GREAT JOB, by both the athletes and the volunteers.

Neither Rain Nor Snow Yada Yada

There was an awesome turnout for a Chugger run out of New York Pizza despite monsoon like conditions. About half of the folks who showed up crowded into the cozy setting of the pizzaria while the rest of us toughed it out in the rain. Fortunately the rain held out until everyone was able to get in their miles.

Kim wasn't affraid of a little rain.

There were final plans made for a run/crawfish boil to be announced in the next couple of days. Stay tuned.

Elmwood Classic Provides Another Extreme Weather Run

The Elmwood Classic carried on the wild weather tradition with temperatures in 30s and 25 MPH wind gusts. There was a run on NOTC gloves and Betsy sold out in minutes (that explains why I was wearing socks on my hands). Despite the blizzard like conditions there was a good turn out for the races and a surprising number of folks stuck around afterwards for some socializing.

Dan made the trip in from Houma for some cold weather running

On a positive note, he weather kept the beer nice and cold. Too bad the beer wagon driver snuck off without a last call, so the after party moved to the Big Easy Bar & Grill.

Valentine Mardi Gras Mambo

A handful of Chuggers made their way up to Baton Rouge through torrential rain for the 2009 Mardi Gras Mambo held in Baton Rouge on Valentine's Day. The weather cleared up nicely and the after race party was a hit.

The Chuggers hanging with Scott & Michael from Happy's Running Club

As usual, John Rincon dominated his age division. This race included a Senior Olympics division which John also took first place in. Great way to start the Mardi Gras season.

Chugger Run #24

It was a great night for running at Tarpon Joe's on David Drive. The temperature was perfect, both the air and the beer.

John Rincon celebrated his 70th birthday with several miles and several beers.

The weather's getting better. Good running is upon us. Check the calendar to see when and where we'll be running.

Two Bridges, No Waiting

A large contingent of the New Orleans Chuggers decended upon Pensacola to run the 2009 Double Bridge Run on Feb. 7th, 2009. We hooked up with the Panhandle Chuggers and about another 2500 other runners for a great time. There was a 15k that started in Downtown Pensacola, crossed the 3 mile bridge to Gulf Breeze, then crossed the Bob Sikes bridge to Pensacola Island. There was also a 5k that started in Gulf Breeze and also finished at Quiet Water Pier, where a fantastic party ensued. Be sure to check out the pictures on the Race Pics page for proof of the festivities.

What happens when you find an unsuspecting napper on the beach?

The after party went long into the afternoon and then eventually moved over to the pier back at the house. Everyone who attended vowed to return next year including John Rincon who dominated his age group in the 5k. If next year is anything like this one it'll be a blast. Oh, and we ended up with several new members, so be sure to welcome any new faces you see at the weekly runs.

Welcome to the Super Stop

In honor of the Superbowl, the New Orleans Chuggers adopted the theme, "Super Stop", for their water station at mile 17 of the 2009 Mardi Gras Marathon. All of the volunteers dressed in some sort of football theme. We had cheerleaders, players, referees and even a coach.

Coach Erwin provided MC duties and encouraged all of the runners through the stop

It was as much fun as it was work. There were hot beignets in the morning and fried catfish for lunch. Thanks to Christine and Danelle for helping the chef. There was also an abundance of adult beverages. Some of the runners even opted for a Bud Lite instead of water.

John Patterson was the first Chugger to reach mile 17

We had four Chuggers complete the full marathon. John Patterson, Brad Groce, Hans DeVries and Ken Landry. There were a number of other Chuggers who did the half and the 5k, and some of them showed up at our party/water station after their races.

As usual, the camera was going, so check out the pictures on the Race Pics page. If you have some shots from the day you can email them to me and I'll put them up.

Chris Bynum did an article about the water stations at the marathon. We were well represented. Check it out on NOLA.com

New Orleans Chuggers Stuff a Mean Packet

Several of the New Orleans Chuggers stepped up to help stuff the packets for the Mardi Gras Marathon. There was homemade King Cake and the work went pretty quickly.

Heather and Ethan blazed through their stacks and were looking for more to do

It's this kind of volunteerism that makes large events like this possible. Thanks to all the folks who showed up and pitched in.

Andrew Jackson Would Have Been Proud

Despite some bitter winter weather, there was a great turn out for the 2009 Jackson Day Race. On a positive note, nobody's beer got hot, so that's a plus. Check out the pics for an idea of just how cold it was.

You can tell it's cold. Look at all those gloves.

Just Another Saturday In the Park

The Chuggers pulled off their first Beer Mile on Saturday, December 20th at Tarpon Joe's next to Lafreniere Park. There were 15 registered runners and another 20 or so on hand to watch the fun. This was an A to B Beer Mile which is a little different than usual. We started 1 mile out from Tarpon Joe's and setup 3 quarter mile beer stops and a finish line.

Celebrating strong finishes in the Chugger Beer Mile

We only had one contestant who "left it all out on the track". In fact, she left a little bit at each of the beer stops. Brad Groce was our winner, with over a two minute margin of victory. Afterwards we all enjoyed some fun on Tarpon Joe's back deck and snacked on everything that folks brought. If you missed it.....sucks to be you.

If you have any pics from that day please send them along so I can add them to the pics that I've posted. Special thanks to Namon Huddleston and Tom Grote who provided the beer for the finish line, and also to Tarpon Joe's who fed us.

Cold Weather for Chugger Run 14

Winter weather is here. That means running in the dark, and running in the cold. We had a fairly decent turn out for Chugger Run #14 at Tarpon Joe's, despite the bitter cold weather.

Tidy Bowl and Sue braved the cold at Tarpon Joe's

After the run everyone piled into the bar to take advantage of the heat and some tasty shrimp pasta. Check out the calendar to see when we're running next and come join us.

Chuggers Chow Down at the Ole Man River

There was plenty of mileage followed by plenty of fun as the New Orleans Chuggers converged on the 2008 Ole Man River Half Marathon. The NOTC moved this event from the Mississippi River levee to City Park, with the finish coming through the tunnel and around the track in Tad Gormley Stadium. This always makes for a great finish.

Kent DeMara, Susan DelCoral and Ken Landry basking in the glory.

We setup in the endzone near the live band and cooked up a pot of white beans and 10 gallons of jambalaya. Judging by the empty pots that came home I'd say the menu was a success. Add to the food a little adult beverage, some live music and a few kids chasing a dog around the football field and you had the making of a great day. If you didn't make it out for this party you need to put the next one on your calendar.

Our 1st Chugger 10 Run Club Members

Back Chugger Run #12 the New Orleans Chuggers awarded the prestigous Chugger 10 Run Club Koozie to its first members with 10 runs under their belts.

Pictured are Heather Healy, Stephen Erwin, Barbara Turner, Kelly Ridle and Namon Huddleston

If you want a chance at fame and glory remember to sign the sign-in sheets when you come out. We've got a few more members who've acheived this magnificent feat since this picture was taken and we'll award them at next weeks Chugger Run at Tapon Joe's on December 2nd. See everyone there.

Eventful Week for the Chuggers

Last week was a full one for a bunch of Chuggers. Started out with a good group run on Thursday night at New York Pizza followed by cold beer and hot pizza. There was a surprise visit from Jules, one of our first Chuggers, who was in visiting from West Virginia. She must be running some hills cause she killed the flat course through Audubon Park.

Jules couldn't stay away from Swami and I for too long. Welcome Back girl!

On Saturday we had a good crew show up at the 2008 St. Edward's Pig Chase. Almost everyone in attendance placed in their respective division (except for Cousin who was relegated to taking the picture of the winners). Fortunately, everyone kept their acceptance speeches short so it didn't bite into the beer drinking time too much.

Congratulations to Jackie, Swami, Susan and Amanda who brought home the bacon at the Pig Chase

The winning just kept on as several Chuggers dominated the field at the 2008 Andouille Festival Run. Again, there's one person who's glaringly not in this winners' picture, but this time it's because he was home nursing an Oktoberfest hangover.

Thanks to Vickie Martinson for sending this winners' photo from the 2008 Andouille Festival Run

Our next run is tonight, Tuesday, October 21st at Tarpon Joe's. Sign in begins at 6:00 and we're off at 6:30. The weather's been perfect so come on out and get your mileage in.

Also, if you're interested in running the McGuires Holloween run this Saturday in Destin just give me a call or drop me an email. I'm heading over there to run with the folks in the Panhandle Chuggers group. It should be a good time.

Rain Can't Keep the Chuggers Down

Chugger run #8 saw some wet weather but that didn't stop about 20 or so Chuggers from meeting at Tarpon Joe's for last Tuesday's run. What the crowd lacked in size it more than made up for in fun.

Braving the rain for mileage and beer

Our next run is on Thursday, October 16th at New York Pizza on Magazine St. Sign in begins at 6:00pm and we're off at 6:30. There will be pizza and beer specials after the run. While you're there be sure to say hello to some of our newest members: John Patterson, Patty Mason, Jamie Ziglar, Royce Porter, Randy Rainey, Renee' Rainey, and David Morales.

Bama Rag Rescued from Trash at Chugger Run #7

It was a great turn out to Chugger Run #7 at Tarpon Joe's on Tuesday, September 30th. We had perfect weather for our run, which was sponsored by Fuel Belt and Road ID. After getting in a few miles the folks at Tarpon Joe's treated us to seafood pasta and beer specials.

Stephen Erwin rescues a Bama Rag from the trash

Mark Hughes called to say that he left his favorite running shirt back at the run. We got a few shots of the shirt as it made its way around the bar. If anyone sees this rag please try to save it for Table Dancer.

Fuel Belt Sponsors Chugger Run #6

We've got a half dozen Chugger runs under our belt and the number of runners continues to grow. We had several new members sign up and several members who made it out after the run for some fun.

Thanks to Steve Erwin for remembering the camera. Bill still can't find his

This run was sponsored by Fuel Belt and the lucky winner of a belt donated by Namon Huddleston was Kelly Ridle. Check out the pictures on the Race Pictures page to see how she immediately put it to good use.

Our next run is tomorrow, Tuesday, September 30th at Tarpon Joe's. Sign in begins at 6:00 pm and we're off to the park at 6:30. The guys at Tarpon Joe's will be feeding us and there will be drink specials after we run.

Mileage and Shrimp Pasta for Everyone!

Tuesday's Chugger Run #5 went off whithout a hitch at Tarpon Joe's. We started off with a few words from Mike Cambre, the Race Director for the Mardi Gras Marathon and then it was off to the loop. There were about thirty runners and another twenty folks who showed up for the fun afterwards.

The last of this group finally left Tarpon Joe's about midnight

Dinner was provided by Tarpon Joe's. The shrimp pasta was awesome. We also had a drawing for some more prizes courtesy of RoadID. We also received entries into the 5k and the half marathon from Mike. We'll be raffling these off over the next couple weeks so if you want to help raise funds for your club consider selling a couple books of tickets to your friends.

Our next run is Thursday at New York Pizza. In response to some concerns about it getting dark earlier we're going to move the sign-in time to 6:00 and the start time to 6:30. We'll try this and see what everyone thinks. There's a ton of folks who like the later start because of work and a ton of folks who want to run before it gets too dark. We'll figure out a compromise. On another note, Susan has finished her probationary period, passed her drug screen and finally passed her beer seller's written test, so there will be beer and pizza for sale after the run!

Finally, if you haven't heard, the Middendorf's Run has been canceled due to flooding. That's too bad as it was shaping up to be a great time. I hope everyong in the area can get back on their feet now that the waters have receeded.

An institution having a bad day. Hurry back!

Hurricane Ike Puffed & We Huffed

It was perfect running weather for the 40 or so Chuggers who braved the typhoon-like winds from Hurricane Ike to come out to New York Pizza for our last run. With gusts of around 30 MPH, there was some serious hair-do damage being done and some of our skinnier runners were being tossed around like rag dolls.

Fighting sustained winds of 30 MPH to take this picture

Of course, due to a scheduling snafu, the keg and I almost didn't make it there before 7:00pm. Let's just say that from the looks I got when I pulled up, there were some runners who needed to hydrate before the run. Fortunately, a bunch of folks jumped in and helped me get setup, and we were off just after 7:00 for the run.

This run was sponsored by RoadID, who has given us some coupons for some of their products. You can check out their website at www.roadid.com for more information or pickup their literature, along with a coupon, at one of the Chugger events. We had three winners last night not counting the one that we picked who WAS NOT PRESENT. Be sure to stick around until we give out whatever prizes we can muster up for the week.

Next run will be Tuesday, September 16th at Tarpon Joe's in Metairie. Sign in begins at 6:30pm and we're off at 7:00pm. Tarpon Joe's will provide something for us to eat and there will be 1.75 long necks and 6.00 pitchers. If you come out don't forget to sign-in. Hope to see everyone there.
